“Chained“ by Alwyn Morrison

“Chained” by Alwyn Morrison is a vulnerable pop rock track that explores the difficulties of being in a relationship with someone who is struggling with depression. Morrison, a multifaceted artist based in New York, consistently writes thought-provoking and honest narratives told over compelling production. With this song, he gets real about the ugly feelings that come with watching a partner struggle with mental health and not being able to help. For anyone who has been with a suffering loved one, “Chained” offers a comforting and cathartic release.

This track draws on thumping rock rhythms and pretty instrumentation, creating a soundscape that is both energetic and intimate. The song sways back and forth over muted acoustic guitar strumming and big drum hits. The vocal performance and lyrical narrative is the highlight of the song, showing a conflicted Morrison debating whether or not he can stay in this relationship. He sings “I don’t wanna leave, but how can I stay chained to a dark room?” But, he also says “I can’t leave you chained to a dark room” after his partner tells him to leave. It’s the heavy realization that there is no good option, and both parties will probably end up hurt either way.

Lines like “know it’s not your fault, but it’s also not mine” are particularly poignant. When it comes to mental health, there is really no one to blame, even though its effects can be painful for many people. There is no clear answer, and Morrison tackles this subject with grace and love.
