Blues rock is one of those genres that I feel will never go out of style, for many artists such as The Black Keys and The Raconteurs are breathing life into it and making it sound better than ever. We can also add U.K. rockers The Heavy North to that growing list. The Heavy North are making waves in their homeland of Liverpool and their new single “Darkness In Your Eyes” really showcases their artistry.
“Darkness In Your Eyes” is a high energy track, as the song commences with heavy, shredding guitars and a loud, intense beat from the drums. The lead vocals are rich and smooth, with just the right amount of grit. A hard, ferocious guitar solo takes hold at full throttle halfway through the song, leading up to a lively, emotion packed bridge. The band’s vocals really flourish at this point as they deliver a soulful, blues driven performance with a touch of smoky harmonies as they sing the following lyrics. “Darkness, darkness, darkness / In your eyes / Darkness in your eyes.” This vocal performance bares a similar resemblance to Eric Clapton’s previous work with the bands Cream and Derek and the Dominos. Having said that, I think both the single and the band have the potential to attract an older fan base.
The Heavy North has been recording and releasing music since 2018 and they released an EP titled Dive Bar Blues on December 4, 2020. The band is currently competing in a music competition known as Bandzai: The Ultimate Battle Of The Bands where they hope to be crowned the winners. Whether you grew up listening to classic rock, blues, or are just looking to expand your music horizon, I would highly recommend giving The Heavy North a listen.
