“Until We Meet Again” transcends time and geography both literally and sonically. The song represents a sound space in which three compelling musical personalities create something original in homage to a decades-old musical tradition, a classic bossa-nova inspired track with a contemporary folky hue. London-based producer Muca and singer-songwriter Alice SK team up with the renowned Brazilian guitarist and composer Roberto Menescal, a titanic figure widely credited as being a central innovator of the bossa nova style. A transatlantic effort, the song was conceived and recorded in Rio de Janeiro and filmed and workshopped in London.
With dulcet tones elicited from his nylon string acoustic guitar, Menescal draws forth the the syncopations and open harmonies characteristic of bossa nova, melding perfectly with Alice SK’s silky voice and punctuated by Muca’s unobtrusive yet impactful work on the electric guitar. There is no doubt that a tremendous amount of effort went into the tune’s immaculate production, but the final result sounds totally effortless, a testament to Muca’s skill as a producer and mixer, the high professionalism of the musicians, as well as expert composition and arrangement.
Alice SK’s voice is perfectly suited to the bossa nova style, yet she brings a unique inflection that adds a distinctive quality to the song. Full of vivid imagery and elegant prose, the lyrics of “Until We Meet Again” are undeniably beautiful, reminiscent of the poetry of Pablo Neruda, contemplating the temporary absence of a loved one and patiently anticipating their return.
