“Kindness” by Linda Marks

Linda Marks is an artist best known for creating passionate music with poetic yet conversational lyricism. Her newest album, “Kindness” is no exception. Featuring just under 45 minutes of music over 12 songs, there is bound to be something for everyone. Whether it’s the non-minced poeticism or the easy-going melodies, Linda Marks pulls it off masterfully.

From the soothing melodies of the album’s namesake “Kindness” to the catchy groove of “Up on the Roof” there’s something for everybody. Both Linda Marks and her band do an incredible job showing off their range and versatility. At times leaning into the country aesthetic, while at others favoring the pop-elements. For example, “Take Me to the River” begins twangy and light, driven by the easy-going strings and banjo riffs. Mark’s commanding vocals fit perfectly into the texture, perfectly bridging the lyrics and country-vibe. As the album pushes forwards, however, songs like “Virtual Pie in the Sky” blend these familiar elements while bringing new energy and sounds. This song in particular does a great job capturing the playfulness of the lyricism and Linda Marks’ personality in general.

My personal favorite song was “Up on the Roof”, I loved how different it was from all the other tunes. The upbeat, jazzy instrumental complemented Marks’ down to Earth vibe incredibly well, and in a way the other tunes didn’t. Not only was it thought invoking, but made me want to get out of my seat to dance along. Adding saxophone helped thicken the band’s sound, and add some new colors to the familiarity of their sound.

As “Kindness” closes out, it leaves you with a smile on your face and a bounce in your step. It is an album as refreshing as it is thought-invoking. The frustration with our society is hidden deep in the bouncy and easy-going songs, creating a totally unique listening experience. I found myself enjoying songs more and more as the album went on, and every new repetition as well. A great example of high-quality songwriting blended with brutal honesty and personality.

“Kindness” by Linda Marks is available now on any major streaming services.
