“Last Night” by Qeaux Qeaux Joans & LAUTMALR

“Last Night” by LAUTMALR and Qeaux Qeaux Joans is what happens when a brilliant singer and a masterful producer come together. Sometimes, listening to a track, you can just tell two people were made to work with each other. Qeaux Qeaux Joans’s soulful, warm vocals complement the ethereal, spacy atmosphere that LAUTMALR creates with elegance. On the flip side, LAUTMALR’s sound design feeds off of Qeaux Qeaux’s tone gorgeously.

The verses of this song take on a really soft, dreamy texture. The synths are either quietly fuzzy or somewhat jangly, like a mallet or a bell. Qeaux Qeaux matches this energy, keeping their voice gentle and legato. As the song gains traction, accelerating toward the chorus, we get more chest voice from them. You can hear the effort behind her words a bit more. The percussive aspects of the production get busier, as clicks, snaps, and booming kicks fill the sound.

The chorus rushes in with a wall of buzzing synths. Other sounds pan from ear to ear as they pulse to the beat. Qeaux Qeaux performs these gymnastic melodies, climbing and falling between notes in moments. It becomes pretty universally catchy here, with repetitive lyrical content and a satisfying melodic arc. Without a doubt, this is a devilishly gratifying chorus.

If you’re a bit of a music production junkie, you should absolutely check out LAUTMALR’s work. This song showcases what he can do quite well, but there’s certainly more where that came from. Also, be sure to give some love to Qeaux Qeaux Joans!
