Artist Interview: “Chosen” by Destiny Imani

Q: I’m always curious about the artist’s backstory. Was there a pivotal moment in your life when you decided to follow your path as a musician?

DESTINY: My love for music began at a young age. Growing up in the church and in a musical family allowed me to further my interests in music as I desired. I began to write songs at an early age, and I have not stopped since. I began to really pursue songwriting in college, and over time I fell completely in love with it. It allowed me to express my feelings and desires in a way that was therapeutic. This year I took a chance and wanted to test out a few of my songs as an artist, and I look forward to continuing my artist journey for years to come.

Q: What was your creative process in making “Chosen”?

DESTINY: “Chosen” is a song that wrote itself. I started off with an experience that I wanted to write about and like a puzzle, everything began to fit together perfectly. I sent over the idea to my producer, and he added elements that really brought the song to life.

Q: The lyrics told a very convincing story and brought out a lot of emotions. Did any real-life events occur in your life that inspired the song?

DESTINY: Every lyric within “Chosen” is intentional. It tells the story of a real-life relationship from the start to the present. I was intentional with my lyrics because it was a very emotional time for me which brought on a lot of uncertainty, but in the end, I made the right choice.

Q: Even the greatest writers can battle with creative blocks at times, how do you deal when there’s a lack of inspiration?

DESTINY: When I am feeling less inspired, I try to immerse myself in new spaces and new things. Sometimes it is good for me to briefly step away from creating as a whole, so that when I return there is motivation and inspiration to make something world-changing.

Q: Who would you most like to collaborate with, if it could be anyone in the world?

DESTINY: There are so many incredible creatives that I would love to collaborate with, but someone who is high on my list is H.E.R. She is an incredibly talented female who in my opinion is dominating the industry at a young age. Her writing ability is very impressive and her musicianship is second to none. It would be an honor to collaborate and learn from her.

Q: What do you do when you AREN’T working on music?

DESTINY: When I am not making music I am playing, training, or coaching basketball. I grew up playing basketball, and it was my first love. I have a deep love for the game, and I try to inspire each and every player I come across to develop a similar love for it as well
