“Double or Nothin” by Breon S.Y.N.D.E.L.

“Double or Nothin” by Breon S.Y.N.D.E.L. is a collection of vibrant melodies, rhythms, and lyrics over an infectious, dynamically satisfying beat. While there are some repeated moments, the pure amount and diversity of the motifs in this track will keep you engaged. Breon, drenched in gloriously robotic autotune, sneaks a lot of complexity into this seemingly casual track. It’s subtle. It’s accessible. It’s brilliant.

It begins with this low-key, pitched-down recitation of the hook. Spacey synths and covered vocal samples course through the background, creating anticipation for when the drums inevitably fall into place–and like clockwork, some quickfire hi-hats signal the beginning of the verse. The melody rises and falls in the same spot each time, with this satisfying glide downwards at the end of each phrase. His rhymes and sharp wordplay make this section all the more memorable.

Once you get to the last third of the song, that’s when things get interesting. The beat itself changes a lot, adding in these tiny yet incredibly gratifying flourishes. The drums come in and out. An organ performs a tight blues riff. It even sounds like there are some reversed instruments, which suddenly gives it a slightly psychedelic tint. You’ll find yourself thinking this isn’t just your ordinary trap song–it’s an amalgamation of influences and meticulous sound design. So, if you’re interested in getting to know some genuinely unique R&B/rap music, Breon S.Y.N.D.E.L. could be your man. Give him a listen and a follow on your choice of social media!
