I feel like we often don’t have many people paying homage to 2000s rock music. You see a lot of folks paying homage to the 80s, 90s, and even the 10s, but 2000s seldom get love. That’s why I’ve always enjoyed artists who give credit to an underrated time in rock music, and Bonze does just that in their new song, “Out of My Hands”.
Musically, this is brilliant! As I said, this feels like an homage to the 2000s while still doing something new. The guitar has a consistent sound throughout and I like that! I think that when artists make choices like this, it will make us focus on what they want us to focus on. For example, having a relaxed and lowkey guitar throughout will make us focus more on the lyrics, and I think that the lyrics are just phenomenal.
Lyrically… This is one of those songs that you hear when you are at a crossroads in your life and you need to let go. Whether that’s letting go of something or someone, the theme is that you can’t control it. It’s “Out of your hands”. The chorus strengthens this, as Bonze says it in a very melancholic way, but they have some more choice lyrics as well!
One of my favorites comes from the first verse: I keep pulling me back, I realize I’ve been spending all my time in a castle in the sky. I love this, because they start with saying, “I keep pulling me back”. Have you ever tried to convince yourself that someone was right for you? Or that you needed to stay at a job even though you shouldn’t be there? You keep pulling yourself back because you think that it’s the right thing to do, but all you are doing is delaying the inevitable. You spend your time in, “A castle in the sky”, because that fantasy is much easier to deal with than the reality of a situation.
“Out of My Hands” by Bonze is truly a masterpiece! I think that it has everything that you’re looking for in a song and from an artist. As always though, don’t just take my word for it and give Bonze’s music a listen!
