“Everything I’d Do (to Get a Hold on You)” by Seafarers

London-based chamber pop outfit Seafarers are bringing their love for the stateside country music of the 80s to the airwaves this month with the release of their newest and deeply sentimental single “Everything I’d Do (to Get a Hold on You.)” Inspired by the great musical talents of the genre who allowed a generation to embrace their own vulnerability through their work, the single embodies the age-old adage that great art comes from three chords and the truth.

The piece wastes no time creating an expectant ambiance as a few short percussive beats played in between dramatic pauses set the tone. As the vocals are introduced, the narrative structure builds a world around us that embodies the emotions only felt so strongly at a tender age with the opening line “We’ve seen this before. High School Sweethearts getting bored.” As the song progresses, we feel the passion in every note.

Lines like “I can’t escape the ghosts, but somethings changes” and “You gestured with your cigarette and told me how to love” read like poetry as we feel a deep connection with the artist in a personal and relatable way.

The musicality of the artists accentuates the story and highlights its validity. From sustained piano cords that punctuate the vocal tambor to flowing saxophone solos that seem to cut right to the listener’s soul, this piece makes a point of connecting with the audience on a human level and allows us to feel in ways that only true art can.
