Indie rock group Dear Providence’s music is a nostalgic blend of unique sounds and instruments. Their latest single, “Like a Saint,” is composed of a melodic, bittersweet instrumental, immediately setting the deep, meaningful tone for the song. Introspective lyrics touch on spiritual bypassing, and how humans often use this to avoid their emotions. The lyrics about growing up and mental health struggles are sung over a guitar and drum-driven track, further highlighting the group’s distinct musical style.
“Like a Saint” is a song that resonates with lovers of easy-listening tracks with meaningful lyrics. Reminiscent of artists such as Alex G and Homeshake, but with an almost 1960s’ Beatles-esque sound as well, the song’s unique sounds blend sonically in a cohesive manner, creating a melodic aura. The lyrics, “As a child you were free, now you’re locked in a cage that you made,” are repeated throughout, as a poignant reminder of the struggles of growing up, a theme many can relate to.
Dear Providence, comprising cousins Eric Mills (vocals, guitar) and Kyle Cruz (vocals, bass), along with Darius Brooks (drums, keyboard), created “Like a Saint” from a deeply personal place. The song, produced and recorded by Eric in his home studio, was inspired by a dream and the mental health difficulties he faced due to a neurological disorder. The song’s gradual fade-out at the end represents a mental breakdown, adding a poignant layer to the track.
“Like a Saint” is available to stream on all major music streaming platforms.
