“kiss like me” by Piper Connolly

Phoenix-based teenage alt-pop phenomenon Piper Connolly has had a precocious start to her musical career. At just 13 years old, she has taken the summer by storm as she’s debuted her music with an impressive consistency. With a vocal range and Tambor reminiscent of Olivia Rodrigo or Willow Smith and lyrical proclivities that would have cemented her place in the Warped Tour community of a decade ago, her energy drives her music on a visceral level. Her latest single “kiss like me” adds great depth to her repertoire as an energetic anthem with a danceable beat.

The musicality of the piece feels reminiscent of the golden years of pop punk but with an updated flare for the modern day. Fuzzy distortion, vibrant percussion, and hard-hitting instrumental riffs give the song it’s wings as a bonified earworm.

The narrative motivation plays as a tongue-in-cheek homage to the belief that no matter how many other fish might be in the sea, her presence in a relationship leaves little to be desired. Playing as empowering and not nefarious, lines like “He doesn’t kiss like me, he doesn’t look like me, he doesn’t talk like me, he doesn’t touch like me” serve as touchstones to remind one to value their self-worth.

While this might be only the third single released by this young artist in her brief tenure, her identity shows incredible shape and prompts excitement for her future. Having hit the ground running so early, we can only wait with anticipation to see the heights of their potential with so much road ahead of them.
