“The Drought Is Coming“ by Andy Smythe

“The Drought Is Coming” is a poignant call to action that addresses the vital need for people in power to act against climate change. Andrew Smythe, an indie folk artist with an aptitude for crafting compelling narratives over emotional sonic landscapes, sings about how climate change is steadily marching towards us, and how we need to act before the damage is irreversible. Mournful violin, melancholy piano, and passionate vocals make up the arrangement, and though the production is fairly sparse, the impactful movement of each element fills the song with riveting instrumentation and captivating vocals.

Smythe repeats the line “the drought is coming” many times throughout the song, representing climate change’s unstoppable approach, and driving home the desperation of the message that we must act. Much of the song is a call out to people in power, and the line “the drought is coming for your greed, for your lust” seems to speak directly to the rich and powerful who value their own desires over the good of the planet. Smythe reminds them with this line that climate change doesn’t care how much money you have- it will destroy every community in the end if nothing is done.

Other lines like “the Earth is cracked and bare” mourn the damage that climate change has already done. With intense wildfires, hurricanes, and droughts, it is clear that people are already suffering because of the inaction of world leaders. Though it is daunting, Smythe offers some hope in this song that we are all in it together, and we must do our best to heal the planet for future generations.
