“Andromeda“ by Summon Luke

“Andromeda” by Summon Luke is an invigorating indie rock tune full of dynamic drum parts, fun melodies, and poignant lyrics. Summon Luke, a fresh band from Ohio that should definitely be on your radar, often weaves mythological themes into their songs, and “Andromeda” continues this pattern. The myth of Andromeda says that she was chained to a rock as a sacrifice, after her mother had angered the god of the sea, Poseidon. But then, Perseus saw Andromeda and fell in love with her, rescuing her and taking her to Greece to be married. This lovestruck fantastical myth is mirrored in this track, which is full of awe at the luck it takes for two compatible people to find each other at the right time. 

Uplifting drum rhythms, joyful guitars, and sparkling riffs weave through the arrangement, and uniquely textured synths fill in the space and offer extra ear candy. The drums switch rhythms to support the song most effectively, most of the time offering a predictable steady rhythm, while at other times hitting every beat like a march, upping tension and highlighting the lyrics in those moments. 

The line “how did a hopeless romantic, beautiful Andromeda, who was chained to a rock, catch the eye of Perseus” directly references the myth, along with the wonder that this kind of love could happen in real life. Even though the narrator seems hesitant about the idea of true love, asking “how does any woman choose any one man?,” he eventually decides to believe in it because of how special it feels, singing “I’ll always be yours.”
