“High Altitude“ by Lex Bucha

“High Altitude” by Lex Bucha is a riveting electronic pop song that takes you to soaring heights with its compelling production and impactful message. Bucha is a multifaceted artist based in Dublin who works to craft soundscapes that you just can’t look away from. With “High Altitude,” he leads you through a soul searching message with ease. The writing process for this song began when Bucha was in Peru battling altitude sickness. Though this illness was the original inspiration for the song, it came to be about much more than a physical sickness, instead grappling with the inevitable dissatisfaction that comes with always chasing more. 

Atmospheric synths, subtly strumming acoustic guitars, and an intimate vocal open the song, immediately bringing the listener into this vulnerable space. This transportive ambience makes you feel “so far from home,” letting you really understand what Bucha is feeling. Muted, rippling drums join the arrangement later and begin to build tension as unique sonic textures pull at your ear.

Lines like “take me back to the hillside” and “take me back to the old me” show Bucha’s conflicting emotions over the state of his life. He seems to have been chasing something for so long, but now that he has finally reached it, he sings “I wasn’t made for high altitude.” It’s a poignant reminder that sometimes, you already have everything you need. Setting our sights on more and more can make it impossible to be satisfied with the good things we already have all around us.
