“Living the Dream” by Allan Jamisen is a dreamy alt rock song that keeps you hooked from the very first beat to the very last. Jamisen is a multi-faceted artist that wears many hats, within and outside of the music world. As a composer and painter, his creativity shines in many different areas, and his aptitude for experimenting is palpable in the unpredictable yet satisfying arrangement of this track.
Acoustic guitar and an ominous synth pad kick off this song, before dropping out completely as the first line sings “it’s always darkest before the dawn.” There are several moments like this where the vocal is the only thing heard in the arrangement, and it makes for some very impactful and intimate moments that allow the lyrics to really sink in. Other lines like “it’s a fine line between weak and strong” add to this wise theme that life will always have a give and take, an ebb and flow. Dawn is always on the horizon, but so is a slip into weakness. Even still, Jamisen sings “living the dream,” accepting that life is still a beautiful thing- or maybe trying to convince himself of that.
Otherworldly synth textures, an eclectic production style, and the unique song form work to constantly surprise you, providing a dynamic sonic journey that you really can’t find anywhere else. Pretty, layered vocals and ear candy ad libs fill out the atmosphere of the track, and a captivating electric guitar solo offers one of the most exciting parts of the song.
