“My Old Friend” by Copperstone

In the past couple of years, we’ve all experienced a wide variety of losses. That’s a given, so when I first heard “My Old Friend” by Copperstone I thought – this is a song that many are going to be able to connect to on that level, especially given recent times. Then I dug deeper into who the song was about and well, the tears started to roll down my face like a barrel down a hill because, in the past couple of years, I too lost a fur friend. Well, fur sister.

Copperstone is composed of two talented musicians; Chris Buchanan and Brian Taylor. When Taylor lost his longtime friend and dog, Buchanan started to pen what would become “My Old Friend.” Not only does the backstory tug at the heartstrings, but the song does as well. It does so by embracing the heart of its storyteller narrative that comes across as an earnest poem laid down across a simple soundscape of emotive guitar playing. So when you take the touching words, the way Buchanan delivers them, and this comprehensible country you get this well-rounded Americana tune that is sure to hit everyone because no one lives without loss.

“My Old Friend” gives you that Americana vibe, but it’s something different for this duo as they usually lean more towards the alternative vibes reminiscent of the early ‘90s with songs like “Partners in Crime” and “Unsaid.” Going out of a comfort zone to comfort a friend, “My Old Friend” shines as a heartfelt moment.
