“Waiting” by Aloosh tackles that difficult and confusing feeling of when something is missing from a relationship. This can be such a hard thing to deal with, especially when it’s not quite clear what is missing. It just feels off, leaving you longing for a solution without actually knowing the problem. Luckily, Aloosh puts these feelings into words so you don’t have to.
With stripped back instrumentation, the lively bass and steady drums drive the song forward, adding intrigue when they veer from the patterns present through most of the track. The vocals mainly feature Lydia Clowes, with backing vocals and harmony sung by Toby Couling. These two voices make for a perfectly intimate duet- they sing softly, yet with emotion, creating a vulnerable space that allows the listener to connect with them.
“I’ve been waiting for the whole night long.” The narrator is sleepless with conflict, waiting and waiting for a resolution that never comes. Perhaps the thing this person needs isn’t even plausible, and they will be left waiting in vain. The fact that the song is a duet suggests that both parties are waiting for something, maybe something from the other person, and neither will get it. The vagueness of the line and the lack of a conclusion perfectly captures the frustrating feelings of unexplained longing.
