There is not a boring moment contained in “2001” by Phantom Isle. This edgy synth-rock track has one of the most effortless grooves, but with the dark chord choices and lyricism of a Radiohead song. It’s genuinely hard to compare it to anything else though because it’s truly unique in genre, sound design, and atmosphere. So, if you ever find yourself wanting to listen to something kind of revolutionary, Phantom Isle is your band.
We’re welcomed by a bright, crispy synth line and a fuzzy pad. The intro of this song screams EDM–but if you prepare yourself for a common dance track, you’ll be quite surprised. With a rake-like strum of an electric guitar, the vocalist comes careening in. A four-on-the-floor kick drum groove sets an infectious beat as synths continue to frenetically swell in the background.
With several recitations of the poignant line, “You had such a long life / Cut short,” we’re thrust into the chorus. The singer takes on a raspier, more volatile affectation as he performs a melody overflowing with gang-vocal-like harmonies. The drums employ a more complicated groove, often emphasizing the rhythm of the melody to great effect. It all culminates in a glorious belt delivered by several background vocals. As this chord shifts from major to minor (a move that will send a shiver down your spine), the verse suddenly returns.
