Have you ever felt like your life was just… hard? Not hard because of what you are going through, but hard because you’re not going through anything. It can be described as a standstill, and it feels like you’re playing… the waiting game. Bellamy King knows how this feels, as his new song describes this exact feeling.
Musically, this is so transcendent! It has this trip-hop, dark pop feeling to it. I think that, like all great songs, the music helps accentuate the lyrics. This feeling of darkness and trippiness provided by the beat tells you that we’re in limbo right now. We’re playing the waiting game and this is the soundtrack.
Lyrically, this is one of those songs that can hit super close to home. If you are an early twentysomething, you’ve dealt with what Bellamy King is singing about. We start off with Bellamy saying, “What if I told you we could disappear tonight, we could leave it all behind”, and I love this start. It’s that feeling of wanting an escape from reality, and wanting to up and leave. How many of us have thought, “You know what? Why don’t I just leave and go to another country right now?” I know I’ve thought that before, and it’s cathartic to hear Bellamy sing about it.
Now, Bellamy King has some dope lines throughout the whole song, so I can’t hit them all, but I wanted to highlight a couple more. The line, “Feeling apathetic and my love life is a wreck, and I don’t give a shit, but I’m giving my best” is great, because of the true-to-life experience many people have with this feeling. I’ve heard a lot of music in my life, but this song gets the true feelings of apathy. Music is at its best when it sounds like the artist has been through what they’re talking about, and Bellamy King confirmed that he wrote this when he felt like his life was at a standstill.
The chorus is super powerful as well, as he starts it with, “Lately it feels like life is just a waiting game, people change but everything else stays the same”. Man… This song is just so good! If I talk about this song anymore, I’ll be giving it away, so please check out , “Waiting Game” by Bellamy King!
