“You’re too old to be a rock star,” is a phrase that is often said by those on the periphery of the music industry. I wouldn’t be surprised if age is a factor that stops many people from ever pursuing their dreams as a musician. It sure isn’t stopping Audra Watt, who released her first single this year at the tender age of 41.
While the era of mega pop stars hasn’t dissipated completely since the 60s, the internet has tremendously democratized the industry. What Audra Watt’s song, “Bullet Trains,” tells us is that, if you have a good story and a penchant for melodic hooks, then what matters most is how courageous you are to put your heart and soul center stage for all the world to see. The power of a truthful story that runs the engine of any good song renders age obsolete. All good stories are timeless.
“Bullet Trains” opening lines are slightly caustic in that the songstress, in all her vulnerability,admits to an element of shame for not having done what she wants sooner; but the joke is on us, because she has reclaimed her pride and is now thriving in her dreams. On her Spotify page, Watt writes that she represents the “modern woman – authentic, imperfect, and unapologetic.” The track now has over 5,000 monthly listens.
Musically, while it does not align with my taste, Watt shows a musical finesse that would captivate and hold outsiders, while impressing other musicians. “Bullet Trains” is a thoughtful mix of Americana and alternative rock, topped with an accessible sheen of pop sensibilities.
