One of the things that Argel MDR is uber talented at is taking his experiences, pain, and emotions and pouring them into his lyrics and music, and that’s what he did in his latest release, which is almost prayer-like, “Love Me Not.”
Starting with ominous piano and a soft beat, Argel and his producer, Grace Chiang, commence the track with the feeling that something is about to happen as Argel sings in his lowest register. As he arrives at the pre-chorus and chorus, the Canadian-Fillipino singer-songwriter doesn’t fail to impress with his vocal range, smoothly switching to his falsetto, beautifully followed by a choir.
Throughout the track, Argel doesn’t hold back from expressing that confusion and betrayal before unfettering himself from that web and declaring the protection of his sense of self.
“Thought we’re up, we’re okay, never heard, anything? / Found the one you screwed over / That’s enough to get closure / Guarding my peace, my heart, and my inner child / Your true colors, as dark as the starless night.”
Throughout the song, Argel takes the listener on a cathartic journey of self-discovery, exploring themes of betrayal and heartbreak. Unfortunately, “Love Me Not” stemmed from him discovering the infidelity of his partner, but beautiful things come from ugly circumstances, and this song proves that.
