Back in the ‘90s when music channels played music-related content, there was nothing I loved more than the Lilith Fair artists like Alanis Morissette, Meredith Brooks, Paula Cole, and so many more. Yeah, I was far from understanding the highs and lows of love at the time, but I felt every word they sang. Of course, the world went around the sun more than a few times since then and with that – times and music changed. However, today we’re seeing a resurgence of strong singers who have such a firm grasp on lyricism, it’s absolutely magical. That includes Ally Evenson and her latest single, “Bite My Tongue.”
Much like in the softer moments on Alanis’ classic ‘Jagged Little Pill,’ there is this beautiful balance between dreamy pop via the music, and an alternative bite when it comes to the lyrics as this song is far from a love song. It runs in the complete opposite direction of one. Lyrically, it’s what one hears a lot from artists like SZA and Taylor Swift (when she’s been wronged), and musically there is a lot that fans of Phoebe Bridges and Hayley Williams would appreciate.
Inspired by a very particular experience when she was 19, Ally Evenson notes of “Bite My Tongue,” “It’s one of those things where you look back you knew it was bad when you were going through it, but it took a few years to step back from it and realize how truly messed up it was,” adding, “However, I think overall, the song is about dealing with trauma and overcoming it.” Many will hear this song and immediately relate as those types of relationships – everyone who has put themselves out there and dated has had at least one like it, and can relate.
“Bite My Tongue” is the latest from Ally Evenson, and the follow-up to her 2020 debut EP, ‘Not So Pretty,’ and we cannot wait to hear what is next from this Detroit-based talent!
