Deep bass opens the song, followed by a steady kick drum and ominous electric guitar riff before the intimate, lilting vocals begin. All of this quickly paints tension into the track, laying the scene for a story about being attracted to someone that is bad for you. Valaura looks into the strange phenomenon of knowing a situation, or a person, is a bad idea, but doing it anyway because for a brief moment, nothing feels better. Lines like “waving bright red flags” and “I’ve been warned all my life to stay away from boys like you” show that the narrator is perfectly aware that only pain will come from this boy, but she has decided she’s willing to “learn it the hard way.” She is willing to suffer in exchange for the brief moments of love and fun with this person.
Chaotic instrumentals and an intense vocal performance mirror the turmoil a relationship like this can cause. But sometimes, it can feel good to be reckless, and just accept the consequences of your actions even if you might regret it later. Valaura perfectly balances the passion, apprehension, rashness, and spirit that come with a slightly toxic relationship.
