New York City-based alternative rock/post-punk group All Violet’s debut mixtape, “Neon Seeping from the Pavement,” is a unique addition to the rock scene. The duo, consisting of Brian Tannenbaum (vocals/guitar) and Mikey Sloan (guitar), has a sound that harks back to old-school 2000s rock groups like Brand New and Citizen, yet has a fresh, modern contemporary twist; their sound introduces an entirely new aspect to the genre.
“Neon Seeping from the Pavement” is a collection of nine distinct tracks that blend seamlessly. The mixtape is a journey, featuring both instrumental, slower songs and hard-hitting, heavier rock tracks. The opening track, “Everything is Medication,” immediately establishes the band’s gritty sound, while featuring clever lyrics and post-punk elements. The song is both a compelling and fresh experience with a hint of familiarity, which connects the listeners on an even deeper level. While this opening music is an exhilarating and high-energy, songs like “Animal’s Domestic” and “Kafka” reveal a deeper, more emotional side of the band. Instrumental tracks, such as “Crosshatch,” add a calmness in between some of the heavier songs.
The mixtape offers a glimpse into the hustle and bustle of everyday city life. It even features real-life sounds of the city: “We recorded most of it in my Manhattan apartment, where the street noise was impossible to avoid,” says Tannenbaum. “Eventually we stopped fighting it and started leaning in—capturing subway sounds, sirens, and car horns to use as intentional layers in the music.”
All Violet came to fruition in 2024 when Tannenbaum and Sloan reconnected after graduating from Elon University in Manhattan. Their music is a collaborative effort, as evident in “Neon Seeping from the Pavement.” Aside from Tannenbaum and Sloan’s work on vocals and guitar, the mixtape also features drummer James Gabriel, who recorded all percussion at his home studio in New Jersey. Bass parts were completed between Tannenbaum, Sloan, and longtime friend Andrew Fish, and vocals were recorded at Studio 404 in Brooklyn. “Neon Seeping from the Pavement” is now available on all major music streaming platforms as of today, August 8th.
