Q: “Another Dawn” is very honest and real, what was the process in writing it?
REBECCA TOMMASI: Making and writing this EP came at a particular time in my life where I really wanted to talk about things that happened in the past. For me, the songs are a very reflective. It was really a journey within. I wanted to ask certain questions and finally come to terms with certain losses in my life. Petals and chaos is probably the song that deals with loss the most.
The song “Another Dawn” is also very personal. The song was originally a poem and I developed it after a conversation with a very close friend of mine, we were talking about our struggles with depression, and all that comes with that, self sabotage self loathing ect.
Q: What would describe the core message of the EP to be?
REBECCA TOMMASI: I think its really different for everyone, everyone hears different things, but ultimately for me, this EP is about healing. I know this word is used quite a lot now, but healing is not one thing, you don’t just wake one day and think, ah yes, now I’m over that, its so layered and dynamic. It’s a long process.
Q: The final song on the EP, “Wallpaper” is really beautiful and thought provoking. What is the story behind this song?
REBECCA TOMMASI: Thank you, that really means a lot reading that. Its about my child hood home, and being in that space as an adult. A few years ago we went on a journey, the relationship between me and the building changed. The building needed me to put it back together, and in doing so putting myself back together too.
Q: How does it feel to have your EP out to the world now?
REBECCA TOMMASI: It’s a great feeling, to think you’ve made something that didn’t exist before, that feels really special.
Q: What was your journey to becoming a musician?
REBECCA TOMMASI: I started really late in life, my first gig was the age of 36! I had taken a solo jazz singing course a few years prior but didn’t sing on my own for the whole year as I was way to nervous! Eventually I sang the “Nature Boy” to the group. It was terrifying but thrilling all at the same time! What followed was a great few years tracking down jazz jams in and around London, then some gigs and then the EP. I never honestly thought in that first year of singing that id ever be saying that, my main objective was to sing one song at an open mic one day….!
Q: What can we expect to see from you next?
REBECCA TOMMASI: I would love to make another EP or album. There are definitely ideas brewing!
