J. Lewis’ single “Breathe” is everything a track should be: powerful, catchy, and meaningful. “Breathe” is the first single off of J. Lewis’ latest project POV2, being released in later January. POV2 is a project about the police, the government, how we are taught to think, and how we should change how we think.
Starting off with the powerful lyrics, “I Can’t Breathe”, most likely referencing the tragic and terrible police brutality incident with George Floyd, J. Lewis’ flawless flow comes in along with an extremely catchy beat. Lyrics such as “I know you’ve seen the news, why the f**k would you want that to be you?” and “I’m just minding my business”, highlights how stressful and difficult this world climate is for many people, when it doesn’t have to be, and it shouldn’t be. Something very unique about this track, is although the subject matter is very serious, the beat and J. Lewis’ voice keeps it light-hearted at the same time.
The fact that J. Lewis’ song is a mix of fun vocals and an electrifying bass, yet has a much deeper connotation, is truly remarkable. If someone were to listen to this track in a club for example, they would be so caught up in the ultra-captivating beat that they might not listen to the lyrics. Is this the message Lewis is trying to relay? To look deeper, think more, and try to see how the world around us is? Lewis’ vocalizes very basic human needs, with lyrics, “Can I live?” and “At this point, we just want peace”, calling attention to how much better the world would be if we all just took a step back and really listened.
J. Lewis’ song “Breathe” is so memorable and unique, and it needs to be listened to. Please take a listen to this powerful track, as it is something everyone needs to hear.
