Christopher Morin, the multi-instrumentalist artist behind the project The Sound of Mountains’ self-titled album, has crafted a deeply moving work of art. The album, featuring nine emotive, instrumental songs, each with their own distinct sound, all share a common thread of passion and emotion. The absence of lyrics in these songs only serves to amplify their ability to tell a story. As an outdoorsman, Morin’s music reflects the calming nature of being outside, offering a cathartic experience that will resonate deeply with the listener.
Each track on “The Sound of Mountains” is unique. The opening song, “Stretch Out Your Hand,” has a cinematic experience–feeling like an idyllic vacation on the mountaintop. The second song, “Familiar Locations,” has a much more post-rock feel, somewhat reminiscent of the sounds of bands like Brand New or The Used. A favorite is “Wake Up, You Living Gateways!” with a dystopian, 80s-rock vibe and gloomy electric guitar instrumental.
“The Sound of Mountains” ends with “Every Burden, Every Crown,” a spacey, hazy song with a sad tune played on the keys. This bittersweet ending is a beautiful conclusion to the album, almost serving as a goodbye to the mountains.
Christopher Morin’s roots and experiences have deeply influenced his musical journey. Born and raised in rural upstate New York, he later relocated to Southern California, where The Sound of Mountains took shape. His diverse talents, including film scoring and his role as a primary songwriter and lead guitarist in a five-piece rock band in Albany, have all left their mark on his music. Equipped with a BA in Psychology, he uses this to craft his sound uniquely.
