“St Catherine” by Possil Mor opens with both rhythmic and melodic strings that immediately up the energy and tell the listener that this is an important song to pay attention to. This meaningful soft rock track talks about how frustrating it is to see vulnerable people being hurt by those in power- especially those in power who have made empty promises to help the very people they are hurting.
Watching the rich and powerful, especially those that hold some kind of political position, profit off the pain of those below them is immensely frustrating. It is easy to start feeling hopeless about the potential for that to change, but Possil Mor offers some relieving catharsis in this track. The opening line speaks to St Catherine, asking her to “save the orphans” and “let my troubled heart rest in peace.” In the Bible, St Catherine was an early Christian martyr and a Holy Helper, making her a very applicable reference for this song. Turning to the saints shows just how desperate one can feel when thinking about all of the suffering in the world, and how it feels like politicians and the powerful often refuse to take steps to end it.
Riffing pianos, accusatory vocals, and dancing strings merge hopelessness with anger, helplessness with determination. The belted chorus at the end of the song heightens the tension and passion, and the frustration of Possil Mor becomes palpable. Though this track does have political meaning, it’s also a safe place for anyone who was counting on someone and got let down to lean into that disappointment.
