The Portland-based trio What In Your Heart Can Put You In A Trance has a new single that is ultra-sultry, addicting, and mesmerizing. “A Midnight So Sweet” is a silky-smooth track that will take its listener on a psychedelic journey. Composed of melodic keys, synths, soaring guitars, and sensual vocals, the group’s name doesn’t lie; it truly puts whoever is listening in a trance.
What In Your Heart Can Put You In A Trance is a trio composed of Prince Joely (written & produced), Mariya May (written & vocals), and Mo Douglas (performed), who created this unique, genre-fusing track. “A Midnight So Sweet”, as the band name suggests, is a head-trip of a song, with differing elements of r&b, folk, dream pop, and electronica, all blending together to put the listener in a dreamy haze. Even with so many different types of genres in one song, it never gets too confusing, as every note, instrument, and vocal has its place and moment, going together flawlessly.
The instrumental alone feels like a drug-induced dream. The low-toned guitars and melodic high-pitch keys in the opening of the track sound like a ‘60s Doors-inspired psychedelic rock song. This changes as May’s sultry vocals come in, wrapping the listener in a blanket, creating a warm and fuzzy feeling. About halfway in, a rich guitar solo arrives, and May’s voice becomes whisper-like as it slowly fades into the distance. In just four minutes that the song lasts, “A Midnight So Sweet” shows what this truly unique band is all about, and what type of music they will create, which is like nothing 2022 has heard before.
