Miss the sounds of old-school rock-and-roll? Listen to Florida’s Roxx Revolt & The Velvets, and you’re guaranteed to get that classic rock, headbang feeling back, but with a new modern sound. The up-and-coming hardcore rock band’s debut album, “Turn Your Head This Way,” is a blast from the past. With such a distinct sound, it is hard to believe this is the group’s debut album. Composed of twelve hard-hitting tracks, “Turn Your Head This Way” is the perfect addition to your summer pool party playlists.
Each song on “Turn Your Head This Way” has its unique flair; some are more hardcore rock, some acoustic. Some tracks sound like they are straight from the 1980s, while others sound ultra-modern and belong in 2023. Although every song is unforgettable, some that stand out are “King Revolt,” “Carolina,” “Rolling On,” and “Second Thoughts,” which are all unique from one another.
“King Revolt,” the second track on the album, is an ultra-catchy, glam rock song reminiscent of rock greats such as Guns N’ Roses, while a song like “Rolling On” is a slow-paced but eager acoustic track. Although on an entirely different spectrum of the genre, the songs play together meritoriously. Each transition of the pieces shows this; “Get High” highlights the group’s classic rock inspiration, and following that is “Birdie Like Women,” a bluesy track with the most enthralling instrumental.
Roxx Revolt & The Velvets don’t stick to one genre and don’t keep themselves in a box. The group effortlessly switches from hard rock, power pop, and blues to even having some elements of Western and punk music, all while doing it seamlessly. Each song transitions smoothly to the next, creating a cohesive, harmonious album.
Although fans of old-school rock will love the familiarity of Roxx Revolt and their sound upon first listening, they are their own band with their unique take on the rock genre. Whereas the term “Rock is dead” is heard amongst music fans today, that term is turned upside down on the head when listening to Roxx Revolt & The Velvets’ debut album. Rock is not dead, it just needed a rude awakening, and Roxx Revolt & The Velvets are igniting the flame.
